GASTON – A 17-year-old girl was served juvenile petitions late last week in the March shooting death of her former boyfriend — 19-year-old Sherrod Person.
Gaston police Chief C.W. Bowser said the girl was placed into custody after law enforcement received a tip. She was placed into secure custody and is being held at a juvenile detention center without the opportunity for bond.
The girl joins Curtis Ra’Heem Sessoms of Tarboro and Marquel Tyreik Hudson of Legget as those being charged in the shooting death of Person.
Bowser described the girl as having a previous relationship with the victim but they were not together at the time of his death because she was involved with Sessoms.
Bowser added Hudson and Sessoms are best friends.
Hudson is currently on 24-7 house arrest after making a $775,000 bond. Currently there are no upcoming court dates for Hudson.
Sessoms is scheduled for a court appearance Monday (July 15), Bowser confirmed.
“This has been a tremendous effort by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation alongside the Gaston Police Department,” the chief said. “Please keep the family of Sherrod Person in your prayers because this is just the beginning of the healing process. I also want to thank the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation for providing the Gaston Police Department with assistance and all law enforcement agencies that have given and offered assistance.”
Bowser has previously said the call that began the investigation came in as a possible abandoned car or collision at the Gaston boat landing.
During the investigation as police were attempting to locate a driver and gather information on the vehicle, the body of Person was discovered by someone fishing.
There was a short distance from where the car was found and the body was located at the boat landing, Bowser said.
Investigators established a connection between the victim and the vehicle and discovered foul play was involved. Investigators determined Person was the victim of a homicide, the police chief confirmed.
Person was placed in the river and Bowser said at the time the suspect — or suspects — tried to conceal the vehicle in the nearby wooded area.
Investigators developed Sessoms and Hudson as the reputed suspects.
The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office said Person’s body was found shortly after 7:15 a.m. on March 16. Person sustained multiple gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said at the time.
