MURFREESBORO – Chowan University’s men’s basketball coach Rob Burke announced that Alex Lewis will be joining the staff as an assistant coach.
Burke noted that Lewis has a diverse coaching background and a strong interest in player development.
“I am excited to add Alex to our program,” said Burke. “He has the qualities of what we want in our program.”
Burke added that Lewis was a really good player at Lynchburg College and has a wide array of experiences from Combine Prep Academy to Christopher Newport to Eastern Mennonite University.
“He is able to connect with young people and has the ability to teach the game on the floor which will be major attributes to the development of some of our younger players. I’m excited to help guide him in becoming a head coach and building the qualities that will take to run his own program one day,” Burke stated.
Lewis is a native of Newport News, VA and his basketball career started early. It flourished while he was a standout player at Menchville High School and Lynchburg College, where he graduated in 2016 with a B.A. in Sport Management.
He continued his playing career with the Hampton Roads Warriors as a semi-professional player, which solidified his deep understanding of the game.
Lewis has plenty of experience coaching at all levels. He held notable positions at Gloucester High School and Phoebus High School, where he had a major impact on the growth of players and the success of the teams. He demonstrated his ability to succeed at a high level in competitive environments at Combine Academy as he led the Regional Team to victory in the HoopState Championship.
Along with his high school coach experience, Lewis has several years of experience at both the JUCO and NCAA D3 ranks. He played a very important role as assistant men’s basketball coach at Christopher Newport University where in 2020 the team made a memorable run to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16. Lewis also had stops at Eastern Mennonite University and Bryant & Stratton College.
Lewis will bring his expertise in player development, scouting technology, and strategic coaching to assist the men’s basketball program at Chowan. He will also head up the developmental team.
The Hawks men’s basketball program posted the best season in the (new) Burke era after finishing up 20-9 overall and 13-5 league play a year ago. Daylan Askew, who will return for his senior season, earned first team All-Conference honors after averaging nearly 20 points an outing.
Burke, who enters season four this year, and his band of Hawks have put together 34 overall wins in the last two seasons, more than doubling his first season win total.
