FAYETTEVILLE – John Richard Asbell, Sr., fondly known as Richard, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024 at his home. Born on October 15, 1943, in Ahoskie, North Carolina, Richard lived a fulfilling life of 80 years devoted to his family, work, and community.

Richard spent a significant portion of his career as a dedicated Concrete Technician and Business Manager, known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail. His industrious nature extended beyond his professional life; he was widely recognized as ‘Mr. Fix It’ and could often be found tinkering with his tools in his workshop or taking care of tasks around the house, whether it be car repairs or building a deck. Always proud of his home, Richard also enjoyed maintaining a pristine lawn. Above all else, Richard had a heart of gold and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. He cherished the moments spent with his family, creating lasting memories through his acts of kindness and love. His sense of duty and service extended beyond his personal and work life. Richard honorably served his country, spending eight years in the Army National Guard, embodying the values of commitment and dedication. Richard was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, dedicated worker, and genuine friend. His legacy of kindness, hard work, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Orthello Asbell; his mother, Lois Baugham Asbell; a son, John Richard Asbell, II; and two of his brothers, Billy Asbell and James Asbell. He is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 54 years, Judith Asbell; his son, Brian Asbell and wife Greta of Fayetteville; two granddaughters, Ashley Asbell and Emily Asbell; a grandson, John Richard Asbell, III; a great-grandson, Jason Jones; a sister, Jessie Spalding of Norfolk, VA; and a brother, Thomas Asbell, Rose of Ahoskie, sister in-law Betty of Greenville and sister in-law Frances of Ahoskie. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of Richard’s life will take place during a graveside service on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC with Rev. Dr. J Brabban officiating. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service one hour prior from 1-1:45 p.m.
