AHOSKIE – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) Pharmacy Technician students completed coursework July 25.

The four students to complete the course included Jewel Hall, Shayla Hooks, Zaria Hunter and Saniaa Norman. Dr. Stacy Simmons, RN was the instructor.

The course was delivered in a hybrid format, which means that students completed some course components online and others in-person.

“This was the first hybrid pharmacy technician course that R-CCC has offered. The students participated in clinical rotations at some of our local pharmacies to get hands-on experience,” explained Simmons. “We appreciate the community’s support and commitment to help grow the students of R-CCC.”

R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams applauded the innovation of the course.

“We are pleased to see such positive results from our inaugural hybrid pharmacy technician course,” Dr. Williams remarked. “This is another example of R-CCC connecting our community to great careers. We are excited about the direction of our allied health training options for the future.”

The 200-hour pharmacy technician course prepares individuals to take national Pharmacy Technician certification exams, and trains individuals to work under the supervision of pharmacists in retail and institutional settings.

Completed tasks included compiling and organizing doctors’ prescriptions, creating patient profiles, making and distributing medications, and keeping track of stock. According to Indeed, the average base salary for certified pharmacy technicians in North Carolina is nearly $50,000.
