WILMINGTON, NC – Joyce Malone Garrison, 89, passed away at home peacefully with her family by her side on August 1, 2024 in Wilmington, NC. She was born on November 28, 1934 in Lumberton, NC.

Joyce was a beacon of love and generosity, cherished by all who knew her. She loved her family dearly and was always there to help when needed. She had a smile and laugh that would light up a room. Always putting others before herself.

Joyce graduated from Barker Ten Mile High School and furthered her education at Gardner Webb Junior College, where she met her husband, James G. Garrison. She dedicated over two decades of her career to the Chowanoke Area Development Association, (CADA) and Chowan University as a secretary in the admissions office where her diligence and warmth left a lasting impact.

A devout member of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, Joyce’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. Her hobbies included sewing, making clothes for her children, reading documentaries etc, and enjoying shopping trips with friends and her daughters, Lisa and Joy. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She had many fond memories with her sister, Elsie Bridgeman, and her niece, Sharon Deaten, who she adored. Joyce cherished family vacations to the Outer Banks during the summers, and frequent visits to her childhood home to visit her Mom and Dad in Lumberton NC.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, James Gardner Garrison Sr.; her son, James (Jimmy) Gardner Garrison Jr.; her parents, Charlie and Velva Malone; her sisters, Elsie Bridgeman and Mavis Strickland; her brother in laws, JC Bridgeman, Jimmy McVicker Sr, and Mack McDuffie; and her nephews, Mark and Steve Bridgeman.

She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Garrison Lane, (James), and Joy Garrison Couch (Kevin); her son, Darrell Bruce Garrison, (Robin); her grandchildren, Dr. Jamie Lane, (Dr. Jennifer Lane), Jenny Ownbey, (Andrew), Joshua Lane, (Heather), Jacob Krieger, (Megan), Justin Krieger, (Teresa), Kristen Amaker, (Wayne), Peyton Garrison, Maddox Garrison, Ebony Garrison, (Jose), Bonnie Garrison, James G. Garrison III, (Alexis), and Mack Davis; great grandchildren, Savannah and Caylee Ownbey, Sadie and Shelby Lane, Madelyn Lane, Aaliyah and Tattan Garrison, Joseph and Janecia Lucas, Jaida, Jaylen and Jaiden Garrison, and Gage, Levi, Chandler, Sadie, and Leah Amaker; her great great grandchildren, Gabriella Lucas, and Joseph Maestas; her niece, Sharon Deaton (Lewis); and her nephew, Jimmy McVicker, (Jennifer), (Jacob).

The family will plan a memorial service at a later date at her childhood home and church in Lumberton, NC.

Coastal Cremations in Wilmington, NC is assisting the family with arrangements.

Joyce’s legacy of selflessness and love will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
