It appears the worst is over.
What’s left of Tropical Storm Debby is now over northern Virginia and moving north. She left several inches of rain over the Roanoke-Chowan area (higher amounts were to the south and west).
The wind never became a factor locally. It appears the major threat was with two strong thunderstorms that popped up last night (Thursday). The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for the Lewiston-Woodville/Kelford/Roxobel area for one of those storms. Another warning was issued for the Rich Square/Conway/Seaboard area. Both of those warnings indicated wind rotation on radar.
No damage was reported.
The Roanoke-Chowan area also remains under a Flood Watch until 12 midnight Friday as on-and-off rain remains in today’s forecast.
The following is the latest update (issued Friday morning) from North Carolina Emergency Management:
The remnants of Debby will continue to move north today before a cold front tracks across the region later today and brings the potential for additional showers and storms.
While the heaviest rainfall from Debby has moved out of NC for most areas, lingering bands of moderate to heavy rainfall will remain possible across eastern NC today. There are additional chances for showers and storms this afternoon across much of NC.
The threat of flash flooding continues today. A Flood Watch remains in effect for areas east of Raleigh through this evening.
The threat for riverine flooding may continue into next week, and Flood Warnings remain in effect for several rivers across central and eastern NC at or forecast to rise above Minor Flood Stage.
Minor coastal flooding of 1-2 ft. of inundation AGL will remain possible through tonight along portions of the coast, with the greatest threat for areas along the Pamlico and Pungo Rivers through 11 am this morning.
