WINTON – Peggy Copeland McLean passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. Born on May 18, 1957, in Hertford County, North Carolina, she was the cherished daughter of the late Edward Thornton “Puddin” Copeland, Sr. and Jewell Jernigan Copeland.

Peg valued her friendships, particularly those she formed during her time at Peace College, where she was affectionately known as part of “The Great Eight.” Other than with her family and friends, she felt most at home at the beach but never turned down an invitation to travel. Known for being the life of the party, she spread light and laughter wherever she went.

Above all, Peg adored her grandsons, who know her as “Poppy”, and would take every chance to spend time with them. She was blessed with being an active part of their lives, memories they will forever hold dear.

Peg made a career as an elementary school teacher at Ridgecroft School and was a devout member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church.

Peg is survived by her husband, Ben; her daughter, Annie McLean Maloney and husband Dan of Raleigh; her son, Gus McLean and wife Carson of Raleigh; her brother, Edward Thornton “Ed” Copeland Jr. and wife Susan of Banner Elk, NC; her two grandchildren, George and Mac Maloney; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

A celebration of Peg’s life will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at 4 p.m. at Murfreesboro Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, NC, officiated by Dr. Mark Gaskins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Murfreesboro Baptist Church, 200 West Main Street, Murfreesboro, NC 27855 or Ridgecroft School, 420 NC Hwy 11, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Online donations can be made by visiting tmcfunding.com and searching for “Peggy McLean.”
