HALIFAX – The body of a man who had been reported missing by his family was found in the Roanoke River in the Halifax area on Tuesday afternoon.
Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said detectives cannot say with certainty whether the death of Mohamed Dhabyani was a mishap, intentional, or he met with foul play.
The 26-year-old Parkton man was located around 1:30 p.m. by Halifax Fire and Rescue along with the Gaston Fire Department’s water rescue team.
Dhabyani’s family was notified, Harris said.
A car Dhabyani had reportedly stolen from Dollar General in Halifax had been found near the river on Sunday, Harris said.
On Saturday around noon, Dhabyani was arrested by deputies for trespassing on private property in the 6000 block of Thelma Road in Roanoke Rapids.
Dhabyani was given a $1,000 bond and confined to the Halifax County Detention Center. Hours later Dhabyani posted bond and was released.
After being released from the detention center, Dhabyani walked to the Dollar General on Highway 301 in Halifax shortly after 9 p.m. and was identified to be the person that stole the vehicle that had keys left in the ignition.
Other than the issues Saturday, Harris said it did not appear Dhabyani had been in prior trouble.
