Chowan women blank Virginia State

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s soccer team picked up a 6-0 win over Virginia State on Wednesday afternoon.
The Hawks demonstrated both offensive strengths and defensive resilience in the win. Five different Hawks scored goals.
Wednesday’s victory moves the Hawks to 1-2-0 on the season and drops the Trojans to 0-3-0.
Lily Harrison opened the scoring early with an unassisted strike in the 6th minute. Natasha Bailey scored her first goal of the season in the 17th minute with an assist from Laura Hulme.
Rayn Ross added another goal with help from Ashley Hernandez in the 36th minute and, just before halftime, Laura Hulme’s goal made it 4-0.
Jayda Dubeck extended Chowan’s lead to 5-0 in the 61st minute, and Ross netted her second goal of the match with an assist from Valeria Martinez-Filgueira to ice the game at 6-0.
Gracie Ross played the first 24 minutes as goalkeeper, making three saves and getting a shut out while in frame. Maya James finished out play in frame in the 1st half but Chowan’s offense kept the Trojans off of her side of the field.
Kirsten Petersen had a strong showing in the second half, playing 45 minutes and adding one save to the team’s total.
Kylee Smith closed out the match with just under 10 minutes of play, also without facing a shot.
Chowan will hit the road this Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. to face Converse College and begin conference play. They will then return to host their first home match of the season on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. against Francis Marion.
