WINDSOR – The widespread arrival of high-speed broadband Internet across the Roanoke-Chowan area is a welcomed addition locally.

But it does present challenges to those attempting to stay up-to-date with the rush of technological advances.

A public event set for Saturday, Oct. 12 represents an effort to bridge the digital divide. Bertie DigiCon: Digital Skills & Equity Conference will be held on that date from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Bertie Center, located at 104 Lancaster Avenue, Windsor.

DigiCon, hosted in partnership with the Albemarle Regional Library, Fybe – a fiber optic Internet provider – and Roanoke Cooperative, aims to empower residents with the resources they need to thrive in the digital age.

The event will feature keynote speaker Phillip Holloway, Digital Equity Coordinator at NCDIT, along with NC A&T’s Innovation Station STEM bus, representatives from local agencies, and engaging 4-H youth STEM activities.

“We are thrilled to bring together experts and community members to foster digital inclusion,” said Rebecca Jinnette, Digital Skills Agent for Bertie County NC Cooperative Extension. “This conference is an excellent opportunity for participants to gain valuable knowledge about accessing digital resources. We also hope to ignite excitement in Bertie youth for our wonderful 4-H programs and other opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).”

The first 100 attendees to register for their free tickets on Eventbrite will receive a complimentary bag filled with promotional items, including a microfiber lens/screen wipe and a USB flash drive. Participants will also have the chance to win exciting grand prizes, such as an HP Stream BrightView Laptop, Amazon gift cards, and Anker Power Banks, which will be awarded later in the day.

“We invite everyone to join us for a day of learning, networking, and empowerment,” Jinnette said. “Together let’s bridge the digital divide and ensure that all members of our community have access to the tools and skills they need for success.”
