Chowan soccer teams sweep Emmanuel

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University swept Emmanuel as both the women’s and men’s teams posted wins here Saturday in Conference Carolinas soccer action.
In the women’s game, Chowan built a 2-0 lead and surrendered a late goal to collect a 2-1 win.
The scoring opened with Abigail Simon netting a goal in the 38th minute, with an assist from Laura Hulme.
Chowan’s next goal came just a few minutes later when Hulme found the back of the net herself in the 43rd minute, with the assist from Simon.
The Lions answered in the 82nd minute with a goal from Veronica Calixto, assisted by Kate-Lynn Jimenez.
The Hawks finished the game with 19 shots compared to the Lions with 11 shots on the day.
Kirsten Peterson spent the whole 90 minutes in the net for Chowan.
This conference win elevates the Hawks to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play, while the Lions fall to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
In the men’s match on Saturday, Chowan battled back from an early 1-0 deficit to post a 3-1 victory.
The visiting Lions kicked off the scoring in the 12th minute of the game with a goal from Luciano Rundles, assisted by Tomas Pollacchi.
The Hawks responded quickly with Charley Leech finding the net in the 21st minute, assisted by Sam Deacon.
After halftime, Chowan broke the tie with a goal from Bradley Binns in the 77th minute, assisted by Robbie Deighan. Matty Doyle sealed the victory for the Hawks with a goal in the 84th minute, also assisted by Deacon.
Chowan outshot Emmanuel in the match, firing off 20 shots compared to Emmanuel’s 13.
Chase Jansen played a solid 63:12 as goalkeeper, recording 4 saves, while Alexis Enriquez contributed 26:48 in goal for the Hawks, making 2 saves.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play, while the Lions fall to 2-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.
The Chowan women’s soccer team will be on the road for their next match against UNC Pembroke on Tuesday, October 8 at 5 p.m.
The Chowan men return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 9 with away match against Lenoir-Rhyne at 3 p.m.
