AHOSKIE – Gladys Jeannette Casper Baugham, 97, of North Curtis Street, Ahoskie, NC, died Friday, October 11, 2024, in Three Rivers Health & Rehabilitation, Windsor, NC.

Mrs. Baugham was born in Gates County on August 24, 1927, and was one of nine children born to the late Cape Charles Casper and Jeannette Douglas Smith Casper. She was born and raised in the Eure community and enjoyed the fellowship of Cool Spring Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Stanley “Shack” Baugham; by an infant son, Roger Dale Baugham; her sisters, Noreen, Claudia “Byrd”, Myrtle, Alethia, Iona, Charlotte; and by a niece, Jean Parker. Her brother, Douglas, is still listed as Missing in Action from the Korean War.

Gladys was, for much of her life, a stay-at-home Mom to her four children at a time when the term hadn’t caught on yet. After her children were old enough to care for themselves, she worked as a retail clerk in several businesses in Ahoskie. When the children were completely out of the nest, Gladys and Shack moved to the Outer Banks for a much-deserved taste of the “good life.” Not yet retirement age, Gladys and Shack continued to work at retail outlets and enjoyed sand and surf and the fishing piers. When Shack passed away in 1989, Gladys severed her ties to the coast and moved back to Ahoskie. Gladys was a good, simple woman who enjoyed the simple things in life, holidays and family, a speckled trout on a limber rod, and good, wholesome conversation with family and friends. She was a great cook and didn’t believe a biscuit was a biscuit if it came from a box or a can. Gladys was a member of Brantley’s Grove Baptist Church in Ahoskie.

Surviving are her children, William C. “Bill” Baugham (wife, Earline) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Laverne Perry (husband, Robert) of Ahoskie, Michael D. “Mike” Baugham (wife, Rhea) of Greeley, CO, and Joy Ray of Ahoskie; a sister, Florence Wall of Winton; a niece and nephew that were raised with her when they were young, Carol Ellis of Sedley, VA and Daniel Bazemore of Eure; five grandchildren, Lisa, Ginger, Nikki, Derek, and Dustin; three great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Monday, October 14th, 2024 in the Ahoskie Cemetery and were conducted by her nephew, the Reverend Stephen Wall, and by Hospice Chaplain, Pastor Brandon Hoggard. Friends visited with the family at the graveside immediately following the service, or all other times at Robert and Laverne’s home, 3420 US 13 North, Ahoskie, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Three Rivers Health & Rehabilitation in Windsor, and to Liberty Hospice for the care and compassion provided to Gladys during her final days.
