FLORENCE, SC – Junior Smith scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute, leading Chowan to a thrilling 3-2 win here Wednesday in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action at Francis Marion University.
The match was marked by intense competition and strategic playmaking by both teams, but the Hawks ultimately secured the win.
Chowan built a 2-1 halftime lead thanks to goals by Brandon Hill in the 19th minute and Smith at the 29th minute.
Robbie Deighan and Smith assisted on Hill’s goal. Sam Deacon assisted on Smith’s first half goal.
Francis Marion’s goals were by Juan Salazar Lopez in the 31st minute and Andre Sabino in the 77th minute.
Bradley Binns had the assist on Smith’s game-winning goal late in the match.
Chowan goalkeeper Chase Jansen was formidable in goal, making five saves from the seven shots faced. His performance was pivotal in preserving the lead, especially under the pressure of a close score.
The win allowed Chowan to improve to 5-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play. The Patriots dropped to 5-3-5 overall and 4-1-2 in league play.
The Hawks will face Southern Wesleyan in Central, SC at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.
