Chowan cagers open season with two wins

MORROW, GA – Chowan University’s men’s basketball team opened their season with back-to-back wins here this past weekend at the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge hosted by Clayton State.
In Friday’s season opener, the Hawks rode the hot hand of Daylan Askew who scored 24 points in an 81-68 win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
Askew, a former standout at Hertford County High School, added four rebounds and two steals.
Aaron Ross also played a pivotal role, contributing 18 points, while Damerius Summers’ came off the bench to score 12 points and grab eight rebounds.
William Hynes added 10 points, four assists, and a steal in the win.
The Hawks jumped out to an 11-0 lead early in the first half before Lenoir-Rhyne battled back to keep the game close. Chowan took a narrow 41-40 lead into the halftime break after hitting shots at a 46 percent clip from the floor.
On Saturday, Chowan hit their stride in the second half, building as much as an 18-point lead, en route to an 86-82 win over Tusculum.
Askew led the way with a game-high 21 points, alongside Summers who tallied 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
Aaron Ross and Cheick Traore added 10 and 8 points respectively, along with significant work on the boards. The defense was on point as well, with key steals from Dominique Bailey, Joe Lazeau II, and Martinie Kamga.
Chowan (2-0) will be on the road again for their next game when they visit former CIAA foe Virginia State in Petersburg, VA on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
