R-C area teams advance to state football playoffs

The 2024 high school football season continues for all four public school teams in the Roanoke-Chowan area.

On Sunday (Nov. 10), the North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the brackets its four classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A).

First round games are slated at the higher seeds on Friday, Nov. 15.

All three of the local area’s Class 1A teams gained a berth in the East Region playoffs.

Bertie High School used a late season surge to finish 4-6 overall and were awarded the #11 seed in the process. The Falcons will host #22 North Edgecombe (2-8 overall) on Friday.

Gates County was awarded the 12th seed. The Barons (6-4 overall) will be at home this Friday night vs. #21 Washington County (2-8 overall).

Northampton High School (3-7 overall) is seeded #23. The Jaguars will be on the road this Friday at #10 Lakewood (7-3 overall).

Despite a rocky start to their season, Hertford County won three of its last four games to finish 4-6 overall. The Bears are seeded #32 and will travel to Elizabeth City to meet unbeaten Northeastern (10-0), the East Region’s top-ranked Class 2-A team, on Friday.

Subsequent rounds of the state playoffs will follow on Nov. 22, Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13, with those games played on the field of the higher seeded teams.

The state championships in all four classifications will be held Dec. 20 and 21 at Kenan Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Carter Finley Stadium at North Carolina State University.
