Chowan football falls short in season finale

TIGERVILLE, SC – Despite a mighty effort in the second half, Chowan University closed out its 2024 football season with a 31-27 loss here Saturday at North Greenville.

Chowan finishes the regular season with an overall record of 3-7 and 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference.

After trailing 14-7 at the half, Chowan posted 20 second half points behind Maurice Smith’s season-high 316 passing yards. Smith threw for two scores and also ran for two scores.

The Trailblazers scored twice in the fourth quarter to hold off the Hawks for their fifth win of the season.

Smith connected with Malique Frazier four times and accounted for 104 yards and a score. Jakobe Lane caught seven passes for 92 yards while Anthony Key caught three passes for 63 yards and a score.

Romeo Felton led the ground attack with 86 yards on 13 touches. Smith added 50 yards and two scores on the ground.

On the defensive side of the ball, Isaiah Pelham had a team-high 12 tackles while Isaiah Fulton came in with nine tackles. Canii Tucker and Marcus Serrano each had an interception in the game.

The Hawks season came to a close on Saturday and the Hawks tenure as a member of the Gulf South Conference also ends. Chowan will shift to Conference Carolinas in the fall of 2025 but will maintain a scheduling agreement with the Gulf South Conference.

Chowan improved their 0-10 overall record from a year ago to 3-7.
