Senior Chance Lassiter tied the game for the Eagles with a pair of free throws at the 3:16 mark of the first quarter. The teams continued to go back-and-forth with Medford and Judson Smith leading the way for NEA.

Northeast secured an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a pair of Smith free throws.

The Eagles pulled away in the second stanza, beginning with a free throw from Smith and a bucket by Lassiter to make it 14-9.

KVA’s L.J. Siplen scored four of the next six points as the Spartans closed within 16-13 near the midway point of the quarter.

Northeast controlled the remainder of the period, getting hoops from Jake Parks and Smith as they took a 20-13 edge into the locker room at halftime.

It was the Spartans who got off to a strong start in the third quarter, getting back-to-back hoops from Siplen to close the gap to 20-17.

Parks buried a triple for the Eagles, but Wright responded with the same on the other end before Parrott scored at the 1:45 mark of the quarter to get the Spartans within one point (23-22).

Smith responded with a bucket for the home team, but Siplen answered with a triple at the other end to tie the game at 25-all with 1:01 to play in the quarter.

Medford, however, put the Eagles back ahead with a hoop 30 seconds later as Northeast led 27-25 at the end of the quarter.

Kerr-Vance surged ahead (29-27) to begin the fourth quarter thanks to hoops from Siplen and Wright.

The Eagles stormed back however as Camden White scored to tie the game at the 7:10 mark. Lassiter then sandwiched a pair of hoops around a free throw from White as the Eagles led 34-28 with 3:46 to play.

Parks and Wiggins exchanged free throws to leave NEA up four (36-32) with a minute to play.

Smith then knocked down three free throws, but a free throw by Wright and a three-pointer off the hands of Siplen put the Spartans within two (39-37) with less than 25 ticks left on the clock.

White went to the free throw line with 21 seconds to play and hit both free throws to put the Eagles up by four and then, after a KVA miss, Smith did the same to secure the Northeast victory.

The Eagles (2-1) hosted Mattamuskeet High School Tuesday night and will be on the road Thursday at former league foe Terra Ceia Christian School.
