Beware of scammers

Public awareness of fraud and scams is the best defense against those seeking to steal your hard-earned money, according to information shared by the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office

If you are ever in doubt, unsure, or questioning the legitimacy of a situation, ask for advice from trusted sources before proceeding.

In today’s world, fraud is a common threat amongst citizens of all ages, especially the higher vulnerability of elderly persons. If someone calls to ask for your personal identifying information over the phone such as Social Security number, date of birth, address, full name, banking information, do not disclose this information unless you are 100 percent confident that the receiving person(s) or company is legitimate. Simply hang up the phone and refuse to disclose your personal information.

Fraud and situations of defrauding individuals is a common issue throughout the year, but during the holiday seasons there is always an increase in incidents.

If you are requested to deposit your money on gift cards or accounts with the promise of an immediate winning you are encouraged to use EXTREME caution and not proceed.

Many types of scams include, but are not limited to, tech support scams, government impersonation scams, sweepstakes and lottery scams, home repair scams, telemarketing fraud schemes, identity theft, on-line car buying scams, and TV/radio scams.

Be very mindful and use caution for what you receive through emails and text messages and the external links you click on.

If you are ever in doubt and the constant question(s) arise in your mind if the situation is legit, there is a high probability it can very well be a scam. If you are ever in doubt, request more credible information, contact law enforcement, inquire and research information, and/or terminate all communications.
