Chowan cruises to win in season opener

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University women’s basketball team defeated Regent University, 103-25, in their season opener here Tuesday.
Former Hertford County High School standout Desiree Askew led the Hawks offensively with a career-high 21 points, surpassing her previous best of 12. Askew also added 11 rebounds, and 3 assists, shooting 8-15 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line.
Kaleah Boykin scored 14 points, shooting a solid 7-of-8 from the field.
All totaled, 13 different Hawks scored in the game.
Chowan took full advantage of defensive stops, converting turnovers into 43 points. The Hawk alsos dominated the boards, securing 71 rebounds compared to 22 for the visiting the Royals.
The game saw the Hawks tie a school record for the second-most points in program history, matching their 103-point performance on Nov. 26, 2016, against St. Augustine’s.
Chowan will hit the road on Saturday, Nov. 23 as they take on Emmanuel in a conference matchup. Tip is set for 2 p.m. in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
