NEA boys defeat Mattamuskeet

LASKER – Northeast Academy’s varsity boys pushed their season record to 3-1 with a home win over Mattamuskeet High School here Nov. 19. The Eagles broke open a close game in the third quarter and pulled away for a 44-33 non-conference win.

Jake Parks, Chance Lassiter and Judson Smith each scored in double figures to lead the Eagles to victory.

It was Mattamuskeet who got on the board early, scoring the first four points thanks to hoops from Hezekiah Mann and Diego Beltran.

The Eagles answered back with hoops from Smith and Parks before Mann scored again to put the Lakers back in front.

Two free throws from Lassiter with one second left on the first quarter clock left the game tied at 6-all.

The Lakers again pulled ahead to open the second quarter, getting a bucket and two free throws from Mann as they led 10-6 with 6:51 to play in the quarter.

Camden White broke the drought with a hoop for the Eagles and was followed by a three-pointer from Lassiter that gave Northeast their first lead of the game. Jaden Medford then scored and converted the and-one to make it 14-10 for the home team.

Mattamuskeet cut its deficit to one thanks to a three-pointer by Dominio Farrow, but the Eagles closed out the quarter with a Parks bucket and led 16-13 at the intermission.

The Eagles took control of the game as the third quarter started, with Lassiter hitting consecutive treys followed by a hoop and a triple from Parks to push the lead to 27-13 with 3:22 to play in the third quarter.

Mann finally stopped the run with a three-pointer, but the Eagles rallied again as White and Smith had free throws to make it 29-16.

After a Farrow free throw, Parks hit a pair at the line to make it 31-17 and Northeast maintained a comfortable lead at 31-19 at the end of the quarter.

The Lakers got the first hoop of the fourth quarter on a score by Grant Melvin, but Northeast answered with a Smith free throw and a Parks bucket to push the lead back to double figures.

The closest the Lakers would get was at the 2:30 mark when Brayden Wynne hit a three-point basket.

Parks and Medford then hit back-to-back hoops and Smith drained a pair at the line to secure the NEA victory.

On Nov. 21, the Eagles traveled to Terra Ceia where they suffered a 68-17 setback in a game that saw them whistled for 17 fouls, as opposed to the home team’s four.
