POWELLSVILLE – Gomer Earl Castello, aged 92, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2024, at ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, North Carolina. Born on April 20, 1932, in Bertie County, North Carolina.

Gomer began his life’s journey on the family farm in Bertie County, a place that instilled in him the values of hard work and devotion, which remained central throughout his life. At the age of 18, Gomer answered the call to serve, enlisting in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. His service to his country was a testament to his character and commitment.

After his honorable discharge, Gomer embarked on a long and fulfilling career with Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, Texas, dedicating thirty years to quality control before retiring in 1996. He remained living in Bedford, Texas until his health declined. After 74 years he chose to return to his roots, settling back on the very farm where his life began. His love for flowers brought him peace and joy in these latter years.

Gomer’s life came full circle as he returned to the simple beauty of the land and community that shaped him. Though he never married or had children, his legacy lives on through the family, his sister-in-law, Linda Castello; his nieces and nephews, Karen Ward (Edward), Debbie Daughtry, Julia Godwin (Wallace), Bobby Eure (Wayne), Al Castello, Cindy Garner, Joyce Wilson (Lee), Lewis Bazemore, Danny Bazemore (Dee), and Cheryl Levinson (Stan).

Preceding Gomer in death are his parents, Lessie and Zeddie Castello, and his siblings, Lewis, Sidney, Rudolph, Carl, Craig, and Frances.

A graveside service will be held in his honor with military honors on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Ahoskie Cemetery in Ahoskie, North Carolina, with Rev. Matthew Miles officiating.
