Hawks fall in overtime thriller

MURFREESBORO – Chowan lost a double-digit lead late in the second half en route to a 105-99 setback against Augusta University at home on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference men’s basketball game.
With the loss, Chowan moves to 3-4 overall. Augusta University improves to 3-4 overall.
The Hawks led 47-35 at halftime and maintained the advantage for a total of 29 minutes throughout the game. There were seven ties and six lead changes as the game unfolded.
Chowan capitalized on turnovers, scoring 17 points off Augusta’s mistakes. The Hawks outperformed the Jaguars in second-chance opportunities, scoring 11 points to Augusta’s seven.
Daylan Askew led Chowan offensively with a standout performance, posting 35 points, two rebounds, and six assists. Aaron Ross contributed 21 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while RJ Wilson added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. William Hynes also scored in double figures for the Hawks with 11 points.
Demitri Gardner had a game-high 38 points to pace Augusta. Max Amadasun added 31 points.
Chowan trailed by as many as six (13-7) early in the contest. The Hawks rallied, tying the game at 18-18 on a fast break layup by Hynes and again at 21-21 thanks to a trey from Ross at the 10-minute mark. Askew and Hynes followed with three-pointers over a span of 37 seconds to stake the Hawks to a 27-22 lead.
Augusta closed to within 32-29 with just under four minutes remaining until halftime. Chowan went on a tear from that point as Ross scored nine points down the stretch as the Hawks built a 47-35 halftime lead.
Chowan maintained most of that advantage, holding an eight-point lead (67-59) after a jump shot from Keith Reese Jr. with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. They led by 10 (85-75) with 2:41 left following a steal and layup by Askew.
But the Hawks failed to add to that lead as Augusta went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 85-85 at the end of the regulation.
Chowan did not lead in overtime.
The Hawks return to Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, Dec. 7 in Murfreesboro against the Barton Bulldogs.
