AHOSKIE – Only three players scored, but that’s all Northeast Academy’s varsity girls needed as the Lady Eagles soared past Kenston Forest, 61-46, here Saturday at the Doug Cobbs Scholarship Tournament.
Northeast trailed only once (2-0) as Hayes Hatcher connected on four field goals in the opening period while teammate Jessa Pope had a three-pointer and a deuce, helping to stake the Lady Eagles to a 15-3 lead.
After Kenston Forest closed to within 15-7 thanks to back-to-back baskets from Hartly Andrews and Regan Tanner to open the second period, Northeast scored 14 of the game’s next 16 points. Pope ended that outburst with a steal that she turned into a three-pointer and followed that with a two-point basket for a commanding 27-9 lead.
The Lady Eagles led 29-13 at halftime.
Sparked by Mary Katelyn Hite, Bryce Davidson, and Kardin Jones, the Lady Kavaliers rallied to within 11 points (33-22) just prior to the midway mark of the third quarter.
