MURFREESBORO – Sitting in front of the image of a cozy fireplace, Santa and Mrs. Claus waited in Riverview Elementary School’s gym. Nearby, a pile of gifts were gathered, soon to wind up in the hands of children.

The students in Riverview’s Exceptional Children (EC) classes, ranging in age from pre-school through fifth grade, arrived moments later and were immediately excited about the opportunity to see Santa and receive gifts.

This is an annual tradition at the school, sponsored each year by the Murfreesboro Police Department.

“For the past several years, we have been spreading Christmas joy to Riverview,” said MPD Chief David Griffith. “It’s just been a wonderful success.”

Former MPD Capt. Jamie Dilday, now retired, was the one who initially got the gift-giving program started back when he was visiting the school to teach D.A.R.E. classes. The department has continued teaming up with the school and local businesses to continue it ever since.

Chief Griffith explained that local businesses throughout town help out by making monetary donations to the department’s gift fund. That money is then given to the EC teachers to purchase personalized gifts for each student.

“They know their students,” Griffith said.

Once everything is purchased and wrapped, the students then gather together to receive their gifts. This year, that event took place on Friday, December 20. Chief Griffith and MPD Detective Holly Stephens were in attendance to witness the smiles from the students as they tore through colorful wrapping paper to discover what was inside.

“Since Capt. Dilday retired, Det. Stephens has taken over coordinating,” he noted, adding that Stephens reached out to Santa and Mrs. Claus to make sure they were able to be in attendance as well.

One by one, students were called forward to sit in Santa’s lap and open their present.

Some were a little shy, while others expressed their enthusiasm with hugs for the North Pole visitors. But all were happy to see the new toys they received, ranging from superhero action figures and dolls to Play-Doh and bikes, and more.

“It’s a total joy to be here during this time,” Chief Griffith said about watching the students open up their gifts.

Griffith said he was thankful that the local businesses continue to show their generous support and the administration at Riverview continues to let them do this event every year.

“We put a lot of effort into it. We all collaborate and make it a success,” he emphasized. “It’s all for these kids.”

Afterwards, Chief Griffith and Det. Stephens were presented with several handmade Christmas cards from the students and a thank you letter from the teaching staff.

“Your kindness and support have truly made this holiday season brighter for our students,” read part of the letter. “We are so thankful for your continued support and for making a difference in the lives of our EC children. Your kindness truly reflects the heart of our wonderful community.”
