Three arrested after high-speed chase

AULANDER – Three men are in custody following a high-speed chase near here last night (Friday).

Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said Eric Reid, age 20, of Durham, and two 19-year-olds, Wesley Lyons of Raleigh and Ra’quan Spruill of Murfreesboro, were arrested.

Ruffin said the incident began shortly after 9 p.m. when Bertie Deputy J. Jenkins attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 11 near Aulander because he had a computerized notification that the owner of the vehicle had outstanding felony warrants from Wake County.

However, the driver of the vehicle sped away with the car reaching speed in excess of 125 mph.

The chase ended on the St. John-Millennium Road at the intersection of Hollowell Road in Hertford County where the vehicle ran into a field.

After the vehicle stopped, two males fled on foot but were apprehended. The other male remained with the vehicle.

Reid was charged with felony flee to elude, reckless driving, fail to heed lights and siren, and resisting public officer. He was confined in the Bertie/Martin Regional Jail under no bond.

Lyons was charged with resisting a public officer.

Spruill was served with an outstanding warrant out of Wake County for flee to elude arrest. He was confined in the Bertie/Martin Regional Jail under a $7,500 secured bond

Ruffin thanked the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ahoskie Police Department for their assistance.
