Emmanuel led 37-30 at halftime and extended that advantage to as many as 11 points (43-32) early in the second half after a Chris Dees basket.

Chowan closed to within 43-39 thanks to a deuce and a trey from Askew plus a jumper by RJ Wilson.

Emmanuel held a five-point lead (56-51) with 9:04 left when Chowan made its push. Baskets by Cheick Traore and Aaron Ross got things going for the Hawks. Ross then drained a three-pointer, trying the game at 58-58 with 6:18 remaining. A trey by Askew staked Chowan to a 63-62 lead with 4:30 left. From that point, there were four ties and five lead changes, the last coming on Askew’s game-winning basket with three seconds remaining.

Askew had plenty of help offensively as Wilson chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds, and seven assists while Ross contributed 10 points and three rebounds.

The Hawks were sharp from the free-throw line, shooting a solid 83.3%. Chowan earned 10 of their points off offensive rebounds.

Kendall Latney led the Lions with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Chris Dees added 18 points.

The Hawks are set to face Francis Marion in Florence, SC on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
