Chowan women remain undefeated with win over Emmanuel

Chowan University twice used six-point scoring advantages to slip past visiting Emmanuel University, 57-45, in a Conference Carolinas women’s battle inside the Hawks Athletic Center.

The win allowed the Hawks remained undefeated both overall (8-0) and in conference play (5-0).

The two teams were deadlocked 13-13 at the end of the first quarter, but Chowan used a 12-6 in the second period to grab a 25-19 halftime lead.

Both teams tallied 14 points in the third quarter, but Chowan pulled away in the final period, outscoring their guests 18-12 to secure the victory.

Yasmine Brown led the Hawks’ offense, totaling 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Desiree Askew finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and 3 assists, while Danea Mackey recorded 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Mackey was perfect from the free-throw line, going 6-of-6.

The Hawks capitalized on Emmanuel’s mistakes, scoring 23 points off turnovers. They also added 14 points from second-chance opportunities.

Dominating inside, Chowan racked up 32 points in the paint, outpacing Emmanuel, who managed just 20.

Chowan travels to Florence, SC for their next game, a 5:30 p.m. conference outing on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Francis Marion.
