Is the Roanoke-Chowan area in store for frozen precipitation tonight (Sunday) and into Monday?
The short answer is yes, but exactly where in the local area remains unclear. What is certain, at least as of 1:30 pm on Sunday, is that the local area will miss out on a major snowstorm. It appears the heaviest snow will remain north of us, in central and northern Virginia.
The National Weather Service Office in Wakefield, VA is predicting a chance of snow and sleet before midnight tonight, then rain and sleet likely between midnight and 2 am on Monday, then rain likely after 2 am. The overnight low is forecasted at 31 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 70% with snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
It appears that the highest chance of seeing snow, sleet or perhaps some freezing rain will be across the northern areas of Northampton, Hertford and Gates counties.
As the temperature begins to rise on Monday, the precipitation is expected to be all rain across the Roanoke-Chowan area. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
The rain extends into Monday night, then a chance of snow between 10 pm and 1 am with a low around 22 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 60% Monday night with little or no snow accumulation expected.
The cold weather sticks around for the remainder of the week. Despite sunny skies on Tuesday and Wednesday, the high will only be in the mid to upper 30s both days. Overnight lows will be in the mid teens.
There is another chance for snow on Friday night and a chance for rain and snow on Saturday.
