AHOSKIE – Della Pauline Anders Lewis, a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, in Ahoskie, North Carolina, at the age of 90 years old. Born on February 8, 1934, in Transylvania County, North Carolina, to parents Dassie and Alvin Anders, Della lived a full life of service, love, and faithfulness to her family. She will be deeply missed by all who know her, but her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.

Della dedicated her career to enriching the lives of adults with special needs, working as a compassionate and devoted teacher. Her commitment to her students was a testament to her generous spirit and kind heart.

She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, often described as the “salt of the earth.” Della took great delight in cooking and gardening, cultivating both vegetables and flowers with care. Her talents extended to canning, making jams, jellies, and pickles, which she lovingly shared with family and friends and sold at local church festivals. Everyone in the neighborhood looked forward to Mrs. Della’s goodies at Christmas.

In her earlier years, Della enjoyed walking along the beach, collecting seashells, and embracing the beauty of nature. She also had a passion for crafts, finding creativity and peace in her handiwork.

A member of Kelford Baptist Church, Della’s life was guided by her faith and her dedication to her community and family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dassie Smith Anders and Alvin Anders; her husband, Benjamin F. Lewis; her brothers, Clyde Anders and Harold Anders; sister, Helen Mulnex; brothers-in-law, B.J. Bristow and Garland Briley; and sisters-in-law, Laura Anders and Joyce Anders.

Della leaves behind a loving family who cherish her memory: her children, Brent Lewis and wife Susan, Hogan Lewis and wife Lora, Benita Lewis, and Sibyl Kupec and husband John; sisters, Linda Baker and husband Ron, Jane Pruden and husband Mike, Ruby Bristow, Thelma Briley, and Shelby Martin; and her brothers, Robert Anders and Don Anders. Also left to treasure her memory are her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Ahoskie Assisted Living Memory Care Unit for their kindness, compassion, and care given to Mrs. Lewis during her time there.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to honor and celebrate Della’s life.
