AHOSKIE – Rodney Wayne Pennington, a man of unwavering dedication and strength, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the age of 57 at his home. Born on November 1, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois, Rodney’s journey through life was marked by a steadfast commitment to protecting and serving those he loved.
In 1987, Rodney bravely embarked on a career in law enforcement, a vocation fueled by his inherent desire to safeguard his community. In 2000, he began a new chapter with Nucor, yet his heart never strayed from his duty as a sworn deputy with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, a position he held with honor until his final days.
Rodney’s passion extended beyond his professional life. A die-hard Chevy enthusiast, he took great pleasure in working on trucks until ALS limited his physical abilities. Despite the challenges, his resolve remained strong, a testament to his character and faith. He looked to God for solace and strength, refusing to let the illness define him. Though gone from our sight, Rodney remains forever in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him—a man of strength, love, and enduring faith.
He was the beloved protector of his devoted wife, Tina Farmer Pennington, who survives him, along with their cherished children: Tristen Pennington Belch and husband Dallas of Merry Hill, NC; Tanner Pennington and wife Catarina of Ahoskie, NC; and Sara Ganus and husband T J of Laurinburg, NC. Known fondly as “Poppy” to his grandchildren, each held a special place in his heart, especially Colt who had a unique bond with him. He is survived by his dear grandchildren: Wrenlee Rose Pennington, twins Colt James Belch and Brett Rodman Belch, Chloe Marie Ganus, Troy “Trey” Ganus, Jett Sebastian Ganus, and another grandson soon to join the family. He is also survived by his step-mother, Jan of Maryland, and his cherished uncle Billy and aunt Willie Dowell of Texas, along with numerous friends who were considered family. Rodney was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Wayne Pennington, whose memory he cherished.
Family will receive friends on Monday, January 13, 2025 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service and other times at the family home. A celebration of Rodney’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, officiated by Rev. Dennis Bazemore. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, North Carolina.
