AHOSKIE – Two local men were arrested here Sunday on drugs and weapons charges shortly after three homes were struck by gunfire.
Fortunately, none of the residents in those homes were injured.
Ahoskie Police Chief Michele Garrett said that after receiving information of a possible suspect vehicle, investigating officers located a vehicle matching that description several blocks away.
Garrett said a search of that vehicle revealed four firearms along with 388 grams (0.85 pound) of marijuana.
As a result, Rhamonte Smith, age 23 of Cofield, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, possession of firearm by felon, carrying concealed firearm, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
Also arrested was 19-year-old Lemajae Norfleet of Ahoskie. He was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, and carry a concealed gun.
Neither was charged in the shooting of the three homes, but that part of the investigation continues. Those with information are asked to contact Major Justin Farmer at the Ahoskie Police Department (252-332-5011).
“I would like to thank the officers for their hard work and dedication to ridding our streets of guns and drugs,” stated Chief Garrett. “Citizens are urged to call if they see suspicious activity. Together we can make our town a safer place.”
