Chowan women suffer first loss

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University women’s basketball team fell to UNC Pembroke, 60-54, in a Conference Carolinas matchup here Wednesday afternoon inside the Hawks Athletic Center.
The loss was the first of the season for the Hawks, who now have a 9-1 overall record (6-1 in conference play).
UNC Pembroke improved to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
Chowan trailed 31-23 at halftime, but rallied in the third quarter to take a 43-40 lead. UNC Pembroke outscored the Hawks 20-11 in the final period.
Meara Carter powered the Hawks with her first double-double of the season, posting 16 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Kaleah Boykin was right behind, contributing 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Yasmine Brown contributed 11 points and three rebounds.
As a team. Chowan grabbed 36 total rebounds and scored 32 points in the paint. Defensively, the team secured 14 second-chance points and scored 12 points off turnovers. The Hawks totaled eight fast-break points.
The Hawks will travel to King University on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a 2 p.m. conference game.
