NORFOLK, VA – Jessie Rae Asbell Spalding, 88, of the 200 block of E. Lorengo Ave. Norfolk, VA, died peacefully in her sleep in the morning of Sunday, January 19, 2025. Born in Windsor, NC, she was the daughter of the late William O. and Lois Asbell.

Jessie grew up in Ahoskie, NC where she graduated from Ahoskie High School, and attended grades 1-12. Soon afterwards meeting her lifelong partner, Bernard Spalding and moved to live the rest of her life in Norfolk, VA, where she lived a life as a loving and supportive wife, mother and friend to many. Her priority in life was to take care of her family and provide for their needs ahead of her own. For us kids, she was supportive in any endeavor we dared to venture into. While providing the protective oversight expected of any mother, she let us explore life in our own direction and without worry…as long as we were home for family supper. You always went to school or work with a full breakfast, with lunch in hand and sat down to a full meal with her family every night.

Survivors include her daughter, Theresa (Bill) Hawkins; sons, Michael (Eleanor) Spalding, William Spalding; youngest daughter, Patricia Spalding; grandson, Chris (Cristi) Hawkins and great-granddaughter, Carleigh Hawkins; and a brother, Thomas Asbell of Powellsville, NC. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years Bernard Spalding, and brothers William, James and Richard Asbell.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, January 27 at 11 a.m. at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Virginia Beach. There will be a visitation at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Sunday, January 26th, 2-4 p.m.
