King sweeps Chowan in conference games

BRISTOL, TN – King University came away with two wins vs. Chowan University in Conference Carolinas women’s and men’s basketball action here Saturday.

In the women’s game, King used a decisive scoring advantage in the second quarter to collect a 58-50 win over the Hawks.

Chowan led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but scored only three points in the second period and could never fully recover despite winning the second half, 33-28.

In the second quarter, the Hawks made just 1-of-10 shots from the field; were 1-of-4 from the free throw line, and suffered eight turnovers.

For the game, Chowan struggled at the free throw line, making only 8-of-21 attempts. They were cold from the perimeter, making just 2-of-13 attempts from three-point range.

Defensively, Chowan had 15 steals led by Yasmine Brown with six and Meara Carter adding five.

Brown led the Hawks in scoring with 16 points. Carter added 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks.

In the men’s game, Chowan fell 90-79.

Chowan led 44-39 at halftime, shooting 16-of-31 (51.6%) from the field, but were outscored 51-35 in the second half.

Over the final half of action, the Hawks offense failed to match its first half effort, connecting on 13-28 shots and just one of 12 attempts from three-point range.

The Hawks dominated the boards, finishing with 17 second-chance points to King’s 5, and outscored them 40-32 in the paint.

Daylan Askew led Chowan with 21 points and two steals, while RJ Wilson contributed 11 points and five rebounds. Damerius Summers added 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.

Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at home vs. Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action. The women (9-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference) play at 5 p.m. The men (9-5/6-2) tip-off at 7 p.m.
