WINDSOR – Patricia Ferguson of Equity Films visited the Bertie Board of Education during their meeting on Jan. 14 to request support for the organization’s goal to revitalize local movie theaters in northeastern North Carolina.

Ferguson first thanked the board for their support in the past. For the past two years, Bertie County High School has hosted the nonprofit organization’s annual Pecan Pickling Short Film Festival.

“Your dedication for promoting creative initiatives like this festival is vital for nurturing the young minds of Bertie County,” she said. “Together, we’re cultivating an environment for creativity to flourish as a profession.”

In addition to their film festival efforts, Equity Films is also trying to preserve, restore, and rebuild movie theaters in the local area. She explained that arts, including film, is essential for a well-rounded education. Theaters are spaces that provide opportunities for educational programs, diverse artistic expression, and community connections.

Ferguson also noted that revitalized theaters can boost local tourism and have an economic impact in the area.

Bertie School Superintendent Dr. Otis Smallwood said Ferguson and her organization have a bold vision for the future.

“She’s trying to revitalize and create an economic engine here in Bertie about the production of film and theater,” he said.

Dr. Smallwood also noted that the county doesn’t have a movie theater, but the high school does have an auditorium which could be used for film screenings.

Board member Rickey Freeman motioned to accept the resolution of support, and the vote was unanimously in favor.

Board Chair Reba Cooper Carlton thanked Ferguson for her presentation.
