Lees-McRae edges Chowan men

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University was edged by the Lees-McRae Bobcats, 93-90, here Tuesday night in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action.
Daylan Askew led the Hawks offensively with 32 points, while also contributing five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. RJ Wilson added 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Eric Gordon Jr. contributed nine points, three rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Damerius Summers came off the bench to score 10 points, with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
The Hawks controlled the paint, scoring 34 points in the paint, and capitalized on fast break opportunities, totaling 24 fast break points. Chowan forced 25 points off turnovers and grabbed 24 total rebounds, with four offensive and 20 defensive rebounds. The night saw 16 lead changes and five ties.
Lees-McRae led by as many as 12 points (60-48) early in the second half. Chowan rallied with a 13-0 run – sparked by two deuces and a trey from Askew, a three-pointer by Gordon and a bucket from Damerius Summers – to take a 61-60 lead at the 13:38 mark.
The two teams swapped the lead eight times over the next five and one-half minutes.
Chowan would build as much as a nine-point lead (86-77) with 4:31 remaining. But the visitors rallied down the stretch, taking the lead for-keeps (91-90) on a basket by Ja’Quavian Florence with three seconds left.
The Hawks (9-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play) return to the court this Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. facing off against Belmont Abbey at home.
