Last week, Hertford County High School’s varsity girls and boys swept a pair of conference games against Camden High School and Manteo High School.
After trailing Camden 22-9 at halftime, the Lady Bears roared back, outscoring their guests 30-11 in the second half to collect a 39-33 win. Janiah Everette led the way with 15 points. Karae Alfred and Jameilya Lewis added 8 and 7 points respectively.
One night later, HCHS rode the strength of a big first half, where they built a 20-9 lead, en route to a 35-27 win over Manteo. Belle Wadsworth led the Lady Bears with a game-high 11 points along with four assists and four steals. Everette added 8 points while Alfred had 7 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bears improved to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference with the two wins.
In varsity boys action, Hertford County routed both opponents last week: 73-49 over Camden and 85-46 vs. Manteo.
In the win over Camden, the Bears placed three in double figures: Rimiez Williams (24), Josiah Powell (17), and Shimere Garris (11). Garris also added 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals.
Williams poured in a game-high 30 points while Garris added 24 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the win over Manteo.
The two wins improved Hertford County’s record to 4-8 overall and 3-3 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference.
On Friday, Jan. 17, Bertie High School traveled to Plymouth where both varsity teams were handed losses at Washington County High School.
In the girls game, Jasmine Taylor led the Lady Falcons with 15 points in a 66-30 loss. Bertie fell to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the setback.
Bertie’s boys were outscored 27-10 in the second quarter en route to a 52-50 setback. Zymiere Dempsey had game-highs in both points (24) and rebounds (14) to lead Bertie. Tayvien Ward added 18 points for the Falcons who fell to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the Four Rivers Conference.
Gates County’s varsity girls extended their win streak to 15 games last week with a 78-44 win over Bear Grass Charter School. The Lady Barons flashed a balanced scoring attack by placing four players in double figures: Semayia Cross (19), Zoey Nowell (17), London Barber (13), and Semiyah Saunders (10). Nowell and Barber also finished with a double-double by collecting 16 and 12 rebounds respectively.
Gates County’s varsity boys lost their game vs. Bear Grass, 86-42. No individual stats were available.
