Chowan women collect historic win

MURFREESBORO – For the first time in the history of the Chowan women’s basketball program, the Hawks have defeated Belmont Abbey.

The history-making win came here Saturday afternoon where the Hawks beat the Crusaders, 55-36, handing Belmont Abbey its first loss this season inside Conference Carolinas action.

Chowan, who led 28-16 at halftime, outscored their guests in every quarter. Defensively, the Hawks held Belmont Abbey to 29.2 percent (14-of-48) shooting from the field and 20 percent (2-of-10) from three-point range.

Chowan trailed only once (0-2) after Belmont Abbey scored on a layup 38 seconds into the game.

Chowan had 44 total rebounds, with 16 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second-chance points. The Hawks bench contributed 22 points. Chowan played solid defense with seven steals and six blocks.

Daneesha Briggs led the Hawks in scoring this afternoon with a season-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Danea Mackey set a career high with 11 points, along with five rebounds. Meara Carter topped the team in rebounds with eight, while also recording eight points, two blocks, and a steal.

Chowan (11-2 overall and 8-2 in the conference) returns to action at home on Wednesday, Jan. 29 against Francis Marion.
