Hawks take down Belmont Abbey

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University defeated Belmont Abbey, 90-62, here Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action.

Daylan Askew led the Hawks in scoring with 23 points, while also adding four assists. RJ Wilson registered 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Eric Gordon Jr. contributed 12 points and five rebounds, while Aaron Ross chipped in 10 points and four rebounds. Cheick Traore grabbed seven rebounds and scored seven points.

Belmont Abbey raced out to build as much as a 13-point lead (22-9) just over seven minutes into the game.

Chowan answered with a 19-6 run highlighted by three baskets by Wilson and a pair of three-pointers from Askew to tie the game at 28-28. Another trey by Askew staked the Hawks to their first lead of the game (31-28) with 6:22 left in the first half and Chowan never trailed again.

The Hawks grabbed 37 total rebounds, with 10 offensive boards leading to 13 second-chance points. Chowan scored 30 points in the paint and 14 fast break points. The bench contributed 22 points, and the Hawks capitalized on turnovers, scoring 15 points off them.

Chowan (10-6 overall and 7-3 in conference play)will be back in action at Bob Burke Court on Wednesday, Jan. 29 facing off against Francis Marion at 7 p.m.
