Chowan women edge Francis Marion in overtime

MURFREESBORO – Yasmine Brown scored a career high 24 points and Nyeisha Savage recorded her 4th double-double of the year (11 points, 12 rebounds) to lead Chowan University to a 77-71 overtime win over Francis Marion in a battle between two of the top women’s teams in Conference Carolinas.

The win – Chowan’s second in overtime this season vs. Francis Marion – allowed the Hawks to improve to 12-2 overall (9-2 in league play). Francis Marion fell to 13-5 (8-3).

Chowan led by 23 (56-33) early in the fourth quarter, but Francis Marion used a furious rally to eventually take the lead (65-63) thanks to Kiara Croskey’s three-point basket with 28 seconds left.

The Hawks sent the game overtime when Savage hit the game-tying basket with 13 seconds left in regulation.

Chowan never trailed in overtime as clutch baskets by Brown and Savage gave the Hawks to lead for keeps.

Brown also contributed six rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block.

Alexandria James-Fearon added 11 points, nine rebounds, and one steal. Savage also contributed four assists, and two steals.

The Hawks dominated the boards, grabbing 50 total rebounds, including 22 offensive. They dished out 16 assists and forced 12 turnovers, while recording three blocks and four steals. In the paint, Chowan scored 42 points and added 11 fast-break points.

The Hawks will hit the road for a Conference Carolinas matchup at Erskine College on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
