Chowan softball dominates Virginia Union University

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan softball team started their season strong at home here Sunday afternoon with a 12-2 and 13-2 sweep of Virginia Union in non-conference action.
The Hawks pounded out 25 hits over the two games to help propel them to the season opening wins.
In the opening game, the Hawks offense exploded for five runs in the 2nd inning and six runs in the 6th inning. Chowan totaled 11 hits and three walks.
Makenzi Curry earned her first win of the season, tossing five solid innings and allowing just two runs. At the plate, she went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Mckenzie Misenheimer went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Ava Mizell went 2-for-2 with five RBIs and a run scored. Calliope James was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Kyra Helton contributed with two stolen bases and crossed the plate three times.
In game two, the Hawks were fueled by home runs from Misenheimer and Lenita Bryson. Misenheimer finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Bryson went 2-for-2, driving in four RBIs to lead the offense.
Emily Fowler went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one run.
Haileigh Boone picked up the game two win on the mound, pitching through four solid innings. Alex Bishop closed it out in the fifth, striking out two batters to secure the win.
The Hawks will return to action at the CU Softball Field on Wednesday, Feb. 5 with a doubleheader scheduled for 12 noon and 2 p.m. against Elizabeth City State.
