Alton Eugene Pope

Alton Eugene Pope, 62, died Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. Born June 13, 1950 in Faison Old Tavern, he was the son of the late John and Louise Pope and had, also, been preceded in death by his daughter, Jessica Louise Pope, father and mother, John and Louise Pope, and brother, Ray Shelton Pope.
Alton was a graduate of Northampton County High School, attended Roanoke Chowan Community College for 2 years and worked as a Car Salesman and Mechanic with Pope’s Garage until his retirement. He, also, had been honorably discharged from the National Guard. He was a faithful member of Galatia Baptist Church and took pride and joy in assisting with church events and programs. He loved his grandchildren but was “Papa” to many. Some of his activities included fishing with his son and riding horses with his family and close friends.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Crowder Pope of Conway; son, Alton Eugene (Gene) Pope, Jr. (Angie); grandchildren, Jessa Spivey and Jace Eugene Pope of Seaboard; two sisters and six brothers, Evelyn P. Bryant (Linwood) of Rich Square, J. C. (Sarah), Donald Ray (Sandra Kay), Thomas (Susan) of Conway, Bailey (Kaye), Jimmy (Fran) of Seaboard, Annette P. Ricks (Clifton) of Conway, Chuck (Leneau) of Seaboard and many nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Thursday, August 9, at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway and his service was held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 10th at Galatia Baptist Church with the Rev. David Foster presiding, Burial followed in the Town of Conway Cemetery.
