Some sports are raveling down, while others are just beginning to rev up. But none are going down without a final flourish…

The Chowan University football team put on for their city this 2012 season with the first winning record since 1999. 2012 has set the pace for Chowan football, this season has been the most successful as far as wins and conference finish since the University made its transition into a four year school in 1992. The Hawks finished 6-4 overall and 5-2 in CIAA play.

The Hawks ended their record breaking season with a 35-19 win over Lincoln University.

Senior Elliot Smalls left it all out on the field and in the record books by breaking the single game rushing record with 200 rushing yards.

When asked “how does it feel to be a record holder?” he replied, “it’s a crazy feeling knowing you’re the best one to ever do it, for at least 365 days at this school”.

The previous record was set by Jawarren Cowles in 2002 when he collected 197 rushing yards against Christopher Newport University.  Smalls rushed for two touchdowns on 24 carries averaging 8.3 yards per carry.

Cameron Stover completed 15-of-26 tosses to seven different receivers for a sum of 153 yards and one touchdown pass. On the defensive side of the ball, T.J. Batchelor had 10 tackles (seven solo, three assisted), two quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a sack.

The Hawks will send off a farewell to 14 leaders and hard-working athletes after graduation. They include: Jobari Coleman-Wilson, Adrian Ferns, David Fulton, Brandon Harris, Bryan Harris, Sean Hampshire, Sherman Ratliff, Ethan Reedy, Elliot Smalls, Jake Thornton, Cornelius Tomlinson, Jermaine Wade, Nick Watts and Hadji Woods.

Chowan men’s and women’s soccer fell to Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. The men’s team fell 6-1 with Dale Pearson scoring the only goal. The women’s team suffered a 5-0 loss.

The men’s basketball team will kick off their 2012 season Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. against Maryland Bible College on the campus of Chowan University.

The women’s basketball team will tip off at 3 p.m. Nov. 11 against the University of Virginia at Lynchburg in Lynchburg, VA.
