MERRY HILL – Youth and inconsistency are two of the problems facing Lawrence Academy’s varsity volleyball team this season.

The Lady Warriors, who have no players in the junior or senior class, struggled with their serve last Thursday in their loss to Terra Ceia Christian School.

“Our serving still hurt us,” fifth-year Lawrence mentor Dr. Ed Clouse said. “In the first game we only served four of 11 in. We got better as the match went, but we must start doing the basics.”

The visiting Knights defeated Lawrence 25-11, 18-25, 25-20 and 26-24.

Offensively, the Warriors got five aces from sophomore Holly McNair who added one kill and four digs during the afternoon of play. Hayden Thompson checked in with seven kills on eight hits with one ace, four blocks and two digs.

Heather Hughes added two kills, two aces and a dig for the Lady Warriors while Jordyn Lyle had two kills, one block and two aces.

Priscilla Lunsford was the defensive specialist for the Lady Warriors as she pulled out seven digs during the event.

“I am pleased with many of the things we did, however, we must find a way to beat a team when they are down and not let them up, as was evident in the second game when we were up 20-15 when one of their top players was injured,” Dr. Clouse said. “It appeared that some of the girls were easing up since the other team was not at full strength.

“I also credit Terra Ceia for hanging in there and not giving up,” he said. “I hope that the injury is only minor and that she will be back to the court soon.”

In jayvee action, Lawrence suffered a 25-14 and 25-12 setback to the Lady Knights.

Chelsea Ginn led the way for Lawrence in the loss.

The Lady Warriors are back in action today (Tuesday) when they travel to Tarheel Independent Conference foe Hobgood Academy.
