AHOSKIE – Information concerning those seeking public office is crucial for voters attempting to choose a candidate they feel is best suited for a leadership role.

For those seeking information about the six candidates vying for three seats on the Hertford County Board of Education, be sure to mark Tuesday, Oct. 12 on your calendar of events.

At 7 p.m. on that date, the Ahoskie Christian Center will host a Candidates Forum regarding the school board race. Hertford County registered voters are urged to attend. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Center, located at 209 NC 42 West adjacent to Garrett-Jones Funeral Home.

Each candidate will be given seven minutes to share their views and values as they relate to serving the Hertford County School system.

At the end of those presentations, audience members will be given an opportunity to ask questions of the candidates.

Two incumbents – John D. Horton and Dennis M. Deloatch – filed to retain their seats on the board. Current board chair Ronald Baker, a three-term incumbent, chose not to file for reelection.

Four challengers will be attempting to take a seat on the board. Former Hertford County Middle School Principal Sheila J. Porter of Murfreesboro filed for a seat as did Marcus L. Williams of Murfreesboro, who has previously sought the office.

Joining them as newcomers to the ballot are George W. Holley of Murfreesboro and Tracey Tayloe Brown of Ahoskie.

Those six candidates will vie for three seats during the Nov. 2 general election. One-stop voting begins Oct. 14.
