WINTON – Filing came to a close here Friday at noon.
With the end of the filing period, there are six candidates who are vying for three seats on the Hertford County Board of Education.
Two incumbents – John D. Horton and Dennis M. Deloatch – filed to retain their seats on the board. Current board chair Ronald Baker chose not to file for reelection.
Four challengers will be attempting to take a seat on the board. Former Hertford County Middle School Principal Sheila J. Porter of Murfreesboro filed for a seat as did Marcus L. Williams of Murfreesboro, who has previously sought the office.
Joining them as newcomers to the ballot are George W. Holley of Murfreesboro and Tracey Tayloe Brown of Ahoskie.
Those six candidates will vie for three seats during the Nov. 2 general election.
Also, the Democratic Party officially made their appointment for the election to fill the unexpired term of the late DuPont L. Davis. Ronald J. Gatling, who was appointed to fill the term until the election, was appointed by the Democratic Party.
Republican Party officials had the opportunity to appoint someone to be on the ballot to oppose Gatling, but made no such appointment.
