LEWISTON WOODVILLE – A Bertie County man is behind bars under a $200,000 cash bond due to an incident on New Year’s Eve.

Salim Gould, 32, of Pine Street in Lewiston Woodville has been arrested and charged with first degree attempted murder, according to Bertie County Sheriff John Holley.

The sheriff reported his office received a call on Dec. 31 that said a person had been shot on Governor’s Road near Lewiston Woodville. When officers arrived they found a victim had been shot and was seriously injured.

Holley said officers believe the man, who was found outside of his residence, was shot in the back with a 12-gauge shotgun.

“From the information we received, the two men were friends until an incident which reportedly occurred about a week before the shooting,” Holley said.

Investigation led to the arrest of Gould, who was charged and placed in Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under the cash bond. As of Monday, he was still incarcerated.

Holley said much of his office was involved in the investigation, including Chief Deputy Greg Atkins, Det. Sgt. Ed Pittman, all detectives in that division and several deputies.

He also expressed his appreciation to the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lewiston Woodville Police Department for their assistance in the incident.

Gould has already had his first court appearance.
