Lady Rams stop Brunswick

AHOSKIE – Two of the area’s top offensive threats continued to prove their mettle Friday night.
Hennie Larabee poured in 17 points and Mary-joe Harrell kicked in 14 more as the Lady Rams of Ridgecroft School topped visiting Brunswick Academy 40-33.
“The girls played well tonight,” Ridgecroft Head Coach Susan Oliver said. “We have worked hard on defense to create turnovers. Brunswick also got into foul trouble and we used that to our advantage.”
In addition to those in double figures, the Lady Rams got six from Tonja Sauermann, two from Elizabeth Joyner and one from Erin Cooke. Lauren Thompson paced the visiting Lady Vikings with 11. Jessica Rives added 10 for Brunswick.
The first quarter was a close one with the teams staying within four points of one another the entire period. Ridgecroft held a slight 10-8 edge heading into the second quarter.
Dani Wright tied the game early in the second period, but that was the last time the Vikings would score for a while. Ridgecroft rolled off 10 unanswered points to seize the lead.
Joyner started the spurt with a hoop, but it was Larabee who did most of the damage as she scored four from the floor and another four from the free throw line to give her team a 20-10 lead.
Thompson finally stopped the run, but Harrell answered with a hoop for the Rams to keep Ridgecroft’s lead in double digits. It was still 10 (24-14) by the intermission.
While the Rams dominated the second quarter, it was all Brunswick – literally – in the third quarter. The Lady Vikings scored 10 points while holding Ridgecroft off the board and tied the game at 24-all.
Rives did most of the damage with six of the 10 points while Thompson and Hannah Parker had a bucket each.
Ridgecroft was far from done, however. Cooke scored from the free throw line to open the fourth quarter and then Harrell buried a triple before Larabee scored from the charity stripe. When Harrell hit another three-pointer moments later, the Rams led 33-24.
Brunswick answered with a free throw, but Larabee hit two more from the charity stripe and gave Ridgecroft a 10-point cushion at 35-25.
The Lady Vikings scored eight of the next 10 to close the gap to 37-33, but got no closer. Harrell and Larabee were able to seal the win at the free throw line.
