Northeast Academy has run their varsity tennis record to 8-4 overall after having success in a host of recent matches.

The Lady Eagles defeated Hertford County High School 9-0, topped Faith Christian 8-1 and defeated Gates County 7-2. They also dropped a 7-2 decision to Northeastern High School and lost 6-3 to Roanoke Rapids.

Northeast – 9, HCHS – 0

In the most recent contest, the Lady Eagles scored a 9-0 win over Hertford County High School on October 1.

Top-seed Kelsey Futrell started the match with an 8-0 win over Bria Freeman. Second-seeded Kaylen Rose continued the victories with an 8-3 win over Heaven Rushing.

In the third-seed contest, Ashton Liverman stopped Brittanie Pierce 8-2 while fourth seed Haley Jones grabbed an 8-3 win over Yvonne Harris.

Rounding out the singles victories were fifth-seed Ivey Little, who topped Tierra Walton 8-1, and sixth-seed Hannah Woodard who edged Courtney Malone 8-4.

In doubles action, Futrell and Rose won the number one seed match, while Ashlynn Bridgers and Liverman won at number two. Jones and Little won at number three.

Northeastern – 7, Northeast – 2

Northeastern High School won four times in singles and swept the doubles competition to take a 7-2 win over Northeast September 29.

The only victories in singles came at number two and number three seeds. Number two Taylor Cocke knocked off Chelsey Owens 3-6, 6-3 and 10-8 for a win while Rose knocked off Caitin Godfrey 6-1 and 6-4 at number three.

Northeastern top seed LeeAnn Owens defeated Kelsey Futrell 7-5 and 6-3 while fourth seed Miriam Cooper topped Bridgers 6-1, 6-0. Fifth seed Katy Murray blanked Haley Jones by identical counts of 6-0.

Northeast – 8, Faith Christian – 1

Northeast rolled over Faith Christian School September 28, winning five singles matches and all three doubles’ contests to win 8-1.

Futrell, Cocke, Rose, Liverman and Little all secured singles victories for Northeast. Woodard fell in the match in two sets.

In doubles, Northeast grabbed wins in all three contests to secure the victory.

Northeast – 7, Gates – 2

Against Gates County, the Lady Eagles scored five singles’ victories and won twice in doubles to grab the 7-2 win.

Futrell, the number one seed, started things off well for Northeast with an 8-4 win over Amber Hendricks. Second-seeded Cocke kept things rolling for the Lady Eagles when she scored an 8-3 win over Kayleigh Evans.

In the third seed battle, R. Parsidin edged Bridgers 8-5.

Northeast came back in the fourth seed matchup with Liverman winning 8-1 over Allyson Owens and the fifth seed contest where Jones knocked of DeNene Hayer 8-2. Little won in the battle of six seeds, topping Alyssa Arnold 8-3.

Northeast won the number one and three doubles contests thanks to Futrell and Cocke winning 9-7 and Little and Jones topping Parsain and Owens 8-3.

Roanoke Rapids – 6, Northeast – 3

Northeast won twice in singles and once in doubles Sept. 23, but it wasn’t enough as Roanoke Rapids claimed a 6-3 win.

Futrell earned one of the victories at the top seed when she defeated Emily Walker by identical counts of 6-3. Cocke also won at the number two spot with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jenna Wessner.

Roanoke Rapids bounced back with wins by Mia Wessner, Zia Muyengna, Rebecca White and Kim Kinnin.

The only win for Northeast in doubles came when top seeds Futrell and Cocke edged Walker and J. Wessner 9-7.
