AHOSKIE – An Aulander woman faces charges in a two-vehicle accident involving a passenger car and school bus near here Tuesday morning.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper K.R. Genao charged Yusandra Holley with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Holley was not injured.

Two students and the driver of the bus were transported by Hertford County EMS to Vidant Roanoke-ChowanHospital. Their injuries were not reported to be serious.

Genao said the other 14 students, all bound for Hertford County Middle School at the time of the accident, were transported by another bus to RCH for precautionary measures.

The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Willoughby Road near its intersection with the Ahoskie-Cofield Road in the Brantley’s Grove community.

Genao’s report revealed that Holley’s vehicle, a 2005 Mazda passenger car, was traveling north on the Ahoskie-Cofield Road and was in the process of turning left onto Willoughby Road. At the same time, HCPS Bus #197, driven by Keyonia Eley of Murfreesboro, was southbound on the Ahoskie-Cofield Road and was also making its way onto Willoughby Road.

The right front (passenger’s side) of the car impacted the left rear of the bus, near its back tires, causing the bus driver to lose control, thus sending the bus off the left side of the road where it came to rest straddling a ditch, titling slightly towards the driver’s side.

The car spun at the point of impact, left the roadway and came to rest in a shallow ditch on the same side of the road as the bus.

Genao said the two students hurt the worse actually fell from their seats on each other. The trooper added that the driver admitted she was not wearing a seat belt and fell out of her seat, causing an injury.

Genao thanked the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office for being at the scene for traffic control. She added that personnel with Hertford County EMS were to be commended with the way they handled an accident involving multiple victims, especially with the majority being school students.
